Years 3/4

Spring Term 2017

Week beginning 3/4/17

All our Year 4 children will be given a Swimming letter, giving information about when their class will be having their swimming lessons at Oswestry Leisure centre, during the Summer Term. Over the holiday, please could you make sure your child has swimming kit: towel, swimming costume/shorts, hairbrush and, if possible, goggles and swimming cap or a hair bobble. On their swimming day, please can children not wear earrings. They do not need to bring in deodorant or shampoo.

There have been some improvements with children bringing in their PE kits on time, but a few children are still forgetting their kits. Please make sure the children bring in PE kits on a Monday, so that they are prepared for their PE lessons. It is very important all children take part in PE activities and it is also a statutory requirement that they do. As it is still cold at the moment, children must wear warm kit for outdoor SportsJam sessions. They need jogging bottoms, T shirt, warm jumper, socks, trainers, gloves, hat and a warm coat. If possible, on the day of their P.E. session, can children who wear earrings not put them in for school just on that day? This would save them having to wear tape to cover earrings for health and safety reasons.

Please remind children to return their Library book so they can be changed on their designated day.  If they haven’t finished reading their book, it can be renewed and they can then continue reading it. This is important; as we can then make sure there are no overdue books.

Can we also remind children to continue to learn their weekly spellings, read regularly and for parents to sign their child’s Reading Companion, if possible every night.  Homework must be handed in on the date shown on the note that is handed out with it. Usually, the homework is given out on a Friday and needs to be returned by the following Friday.

Thank you.

As we are having P.E. sessions on the back field, Mr Rhodes has asked children that, if they have football boots, could they bring them in for the lessons, as well as their trainers.

Help with Art!

Could anyone donate any old adult sized shirts that could be used in our Art lessons. We would really appreciate it if you could help us to keep your child clean and paint free.

As we are focusing on improving handwriting, the children who are making brilliant efforts are being rewarded with a Handwriting Certificate by their Class Teacher. One child per class will receive this reward at our Year Group Assembly on a Thursday.

Can we also remind children to continue to learn their weekly spellings, read regularly and for parents to sign their child’s Reading Companion, if possible every night. Autumn Term 2016

Week beginning 5/12/16

We’ve had another busy week in Year 3/4.  We’ve been practising our Christmas show and can we thank you for starting to bring in the costumes that your child requires.

This week, can your child bring in their library book as it needs to be scanned back in for the Christmas period. Anne Taylan, our school librarian, will be checking the stock to ensure that we have a wide range of texts available for your child to have access to in the New Year.

Please take some time to look at the diary on the website to familiarise yourself with the dates for the beginning of term as the 3rd January is a PD day.

Over the holiday period, enjoy time as a family but can you also spend a some of it listening to your child read, as we still have a few children who don’t read on a regular basis. Please can you also work on the set of multiplication tables that your child is given to learn over the festive period. We’re aiming for each child to be able to recall their set of multiplication tables in 30 seconds so it would be great if you could time them and mark any improvement in their reading companion that your child brings home with them. We will then test your child on their return to school.

The 3/4 Team

Week beginning 28/11/16

Our Christmas performances are on Thursday 15th December at 10.00 and 1.30.

Week beginning 14/11/16

Parents’ consultation meetings will be taking place on:

Tuesday 15th November 5.00 – 7.30
Wednesday 16th November 3.20 – 5.30

Some children are forgetting to bring in their Forest School and P.E. kits. Please make sure your child brings in the appropriate kits in on the correct day. Taking part in Physical Education is an important part of your child’s development. We have invested heavily in PE and Sport over the last two years and aim to continue with this. We have support from Sports Jam in school. Your child may have spoken to you about this. Their teachers and coaches support your children’s learning and also offer their expertise after school hours in the form of an after school club. Forest school is now an integral part of your child’s learning. Each week, your child takes part in a lesson outside in our designated Forest School area. Mrs Hoskisson-Craven develops the learning that your child does outside and builds upon their knowledge and understanding of the world. Having the correct clothing ensures that your child can fully enjoy these lessons without becoming cold or wet.

For homework this week, children need to continue practising multiplication tables facts and number bonds. Please carry on encouraging them to learn and have quick recall of these number facts.

Can we also remind you that children need to continue learning their weekly spellings, read regularly and can parents sign their child’s Reading Companion each night.

On Thursday 17th November, Gwenan Griffiths from Oswestry Library will be visiting school to talk to the year group about the books on offer at the town library. She’ll be bringing in a selection of books which are aimed at children who may not necessarily be enthused by reading. Hopefully we’ll follow this up with a visit to the library in the near future.

Parents’ consultation meetings will be taking place on:

Tuesday 15th November 5.00 – 7.30
Wednesday 16th November 3.20 – 5.30

Some children are forgetting to bring in their Forest School and P.E. kits. This is a shame, as they will be unable to take part in sessions. Please make sure your child brings in the appropriate kits in on the correct day.

We have begun practising for our Christmas performance. Your child will be bringing home the script and song lyrics. Please encourage them to learn the words to the songs and become familiar with the story of The Christmas Factory.

For homework this week, children need to continue practising multiplication tables facts and number bonds. Please carry on encouraging them to learn and have quick recall of these number facts. Your child needs to practise these facts regularly, as the more they do so, the quicker their recall will be. Also to practise quick recall of number bonds from 1 up to 20 e.g. 1 + ? = 20, 7 + ? = 20, 15 + ? = 20.

Can we also remind children to continue learning their weekly spellings, read regularly and for parents to sign their child’s Reading Companion, if possible each night.

Please remind your child to return their library book on time for their Library session, each week. If they haven’t finished reading their book, it can be renewed and they can then continue reading it. This is important; as we can then make sure there are no overdue books. The children will also have a book that they can read during the holiday.

The  3/4 Team

Week beginning 14/10/16

Remember that the last day of this half term is on Thursday 20th October. The children need to take home their P.E. kit and make sure they return it on the first day back on 31st October.

Some children are forgetting to bring in their Forest School kit. This is a shame, as they will be unable to take part in the sessions. Please make sure your child brings in the appropriate Forest School kit. The weather is very changeable at the moment, becoming cooler and wetter. The kit needs to be: jogging top/bottoms, T shirt, waterproof jacket and bottoms socks and wellies. A hat and gloves would be useful too.

Please carry on encouraging the children to learn and have quick recall of multiplication number facts.  Your child needs to practise these facts regularly, as the more they do so, the quicker their recall will be. Also to practise quick recall of number bonds from 1 up to 20 e.g. 1 + ? = 20, 7 + ? = 20,  15 + ? = 20. Please encourage children to learn these.

Can we also remind children to continue to learn their weekly spellings, read regularly and for parents to sign their child’s Reading Companion, if possible, each night.

Please remind you child to return their library book on time for their Library session each week.  If they haven’t finished reading their book, it can be renewed and they can then continue reading it. This is important as we can then make sure there are no overdue books. The children will also have a book that they can read during the holiday.

Our trip to Theatre Seven to watch the production of Gangsta Granny was a huge success. Our children were a credit to our school and the staff at the theatre complimented us on our children’s exemplary behaviour and polite manners.

The  3/4 Team

Week beginning 26/09/16

Next Thursday, on 6th October, our cross country team will be competing against other Primary schools in North Shropshire. This will take place at The Marches School. Children who wish to compete will need to return their letter to either Charlotte Rowlands or Hannah Phillips.

Please remind you child to return their library book on time. If they haven’t finished reading their book, it can be renewed and they can then continue reading it. This is important; as we can then make sure there are no overdue books.

Please ensure your child completes homework and returns it on time. The homework is given out each Friday, to be returned the following Wednesday. If your child is absent, they need to ask their teacher for it as soon as they return to school.

PE kits need to be in school on a Monday morning and need to be taken home on a Friday. Trainers need to be worn during outdoor PE. Please don’t send in the black style pumps, as these let in water and aren’t supportive enough to maintain your child’s safety.

This week, our Forest Schools sessions started led by kath Hoskisson-Craven. Thank you for all the children being well prepared and dressed for the sessions.

Forest Schools sessions for the children are on:
Monday: 3/4S, Tuesday: 3/4P, Wednesday: 3/4R, Thursday: 3/4LH. Friday: 3/4H

Thank you to those of you who have returned voluntary contributions and permission slips for our trip to Shrewsbury’s Theatre Seven to watch Gangsta Granny. Any children who have not returned these, please do so as soon as possible.

Please continue use the online NumberGym site to play games and practise quicker recall of number facts.

3/4 team

Week beginning 12/09/16

Welcome back to school and thank you for supporting our Dress Code and making sure your child adheres to this. All of our children look very smart. Just a quick reminder about earrings: Please make sure that children who wear these, only wear small gold or silver studs or hoops.

Please remember that PE kits need to be in school each Monday morning and can be taken home on Friday. Trainers need to be worn during outdoor PE. Please don’t send in the black style pumps as these let in a great deal of water and aren’t supportive enough to maintain your child’s safety during our lessons provided by Sports Jam. Also, as the weather is changeable, the children would benefit from still bringing in a sun hat, water bottle, a sweat shirt and jogging bottoms, as well as an outdoor waterproof coat for outdoor lessons and black shorts/ white T-shirt for indoor sessions.

Thank you for those children who have returned the Theatre Seven Trip money and permission slip so promptly. If you haven’t done so, please send these in as soon as possible.

Homework is given out by your child’s Class Teacher on Friday afternoons. This should be completed and returned by the following Wednesday morning at the latest.

All the children know how to use the NumberGym website, which will help them greatly in learning multiplication and number facts. If you make a Google search for NumberGym, then follow the online access tab, this will allow your child then to play numerous games targeted at improving Maths knowledge. The logging in details are case sensitive:

User name: woodside
Password: gittin

Children can then log in using their name.
